What Type of Services Are available?
Ethernet WAN or Wide Area Network services connect from your company headquarters to your branch offices, retail locations, warehouses, remote data centers and other locations. You can get EVPL Ethernet Virtual Private Line service that is a direct point to point connection between two locations. Another service is called VPLS or Virtual Private LAN service, which extends your LAN network to include several or many other locations. Within a city and suburbs, you'll hear these services referred to as Metro Ethernet or Metro E. If you wish to include locations in other cities or states, you'll be using long haul Ethernet connections, generally called Carrier Ethernet.

A very popular "cloud" networking service for connecting up to hundreds or thousands of locations is called MPLS for Multi-Protocol Label Switching. MPLS networks support fully meshed WAN networks and voice, video and data network convergence. If you have implemented enterprise VoIP on your network, the way to preserve voice quality outside of your facility is to use a fully converged network that protects the integrity of time sensitive services, such as voice and video. MPLS networks specialize in network convergence over national and international service areas.

A newer technology for connecting multiple business locations is SD-WAN or Managed SDN (Software Defined Networking). This is generally offered as a cloud service that manages multiple connections, including the Internet, to provide the right speed and latency for each application at the lower cost than MPLS networking.
